WHEDco Greenhouse Ribbon-Cutting to Celebrate Launch of Year-Round Farming at South Bronx Affordable Housing Development

The Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDco) will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new greenhouse, expanding a South Bronx urban farming program that has yielded nearly 1,000 pounds of produce for low-income tenant families so far this year.

Family Art Project: Dances with Leaves

Fashion a festive crown from fall leaves and leaf rubbings, toss leaves in the wind and walk through leaf piles. Make artful arrangements of leaves on the lawn and collage leaf designs to carry home. For more information visit www.wavehill.org

Terrarium Workshop

Horticulturalist Maria Colletti will teach a workshop on making miniature gardens—tropical plant terrariums, hanging glass globes with air plants, succulent and moss dish gardens, and more. Each participant will be create and take home a garden—a spot of growth and green for the long winter months ahead.

One of the few authentic Puerto Rican bolero trios remaining in the New York City area, Trio Los Platinos blends the traditional, “old style” romantic music of their island home with guitar playing and gentle rhythms. Consisting of Ray Vasques (lead vocals and maracas), Julito Cuevas (second vocals and rhythm guitar), and Julio Melendez (third vocals and lead guitar), Trio Los Platinos has played together for over 40 years. They have also appeared on TV shows on Spanish language stations, and have won awards from various organizations as well as from “Vanidades” magazine.

Film: The Borinqueneers and a Q&A with executive producer Noemi Figueroa Soulet and 65th Regiment veteran Eugenio Quevado

The Borinqueeners explores the rich story of the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the U.S. Army, the 65th Infantry Regiment, comprised primarily of Puerto Ricans. The regiment was established in 1899 and fought meritoriously in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Premiering on PBS in 2007, the acclaimed documentary has screened at numerous film festivals around the U.S., as well as in Cuba, Spain, and other countries. Executive producer and former professional actress Noemi Figueroa Soulet will conduct a Q&A following the screening, along with 65th Regiment veteran Eugenio Quevado. Family Art Project: Cornhusk Dolls

Celebrate corn and harvest time! Listen to tales told by Native American Danielle Soames, and hear the story of the first cornhusk doll. Then tie, weave and shape our dried husks into a single, cornhusk doll or corny doll family. Two sessions meet, at 10AM and at 11:30AM

Palabras/Words: Reading from Chulito: The Novel by author Charles Rice Gonzalez and special guest Born in Puerto Rico and reared in the Bronx, Charles Rice-Gonzalez is a writer and long-time LGBT activist who is currently the Executive Director of the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!) and serves on the Bronx Council on the Arts. Chulito, his debut novel, is a coming-of-age and coming-out love story of a sexy, tough, hip hop-loving, young Latino man and the colorful characters who populate his block, set against the backdrop of a vibrant South Bronx neighborhood. Gather fall leaves, cones, pods and seed heads. Weave them together with other materials from gardens and meadows to create a decorative wall hanging celebrating the bounty and beauty of the season.
