Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation to Hold 6th Annual Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium on August 3
According to Cancer Facts and Figures 2014 by the American Cancer Society, cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States killing almost 1,600 people per day this year. This Sunday, August 3rd The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation will hold their 6th Annual Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium. The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation funds funds early career cancer researchers who have the energy, drive and creativity to become leading innovators in their fields – and 100% of funds raised by participants at the Runyon 5K will directly support innovative cancer research by brilliant early career scientists.
If you are an avid runner and would like to put your athletic ability and endurance towards a good cause you can still register by emailing runyon5k@damonrunyon.org and can also register the day of the race.
The course winds through the ballpark’s concourses and ramps, and up stairs between levels. Participants will have the opportunity to take two laps around the warning track that circles the field, see themselves on the centerfield video board, and meet scientists funded by Damon Runyon.

Space permitting, event day registration will be available from 9:30-10:30am at Yankee Stadium. Last year’s event raised more than $760,000, and the Runyon 5K has raised more than $3 million for cancer research since its inception in 2009. In years past, participants have ranged in age from 5 to 78 years old, coming from more than 35 states.
The Runyon 5K marks the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s long history with the Yankees. After the Foundation’s establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser. Damon Runyon, who died from throat cancer in 1946, was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist. He revolutionized how the game was covered and often reported on Yankees games.
The 2014 Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium is presented by MetLife Foundation.
